It's Thursday morning. After my redeye flight I head straight to Sheboygan County, Wisconsin where the famous Road America race track is located. After seeing the track in videogames I couldn't believe I get the privilege to photograph race bikes trackside. Upon entering the main gates I make my way into the media center, and take a look around the vicinity. This is where all the photographers, videographers, live TV streaming, and interviews take place. Plus you get a great view of the start finish straight.
Being this was my first time here I drove around the track to check out some corners, and to do some research on where I thought shots would look best and where I was permitted to go. I couldn't believe how massive this track was, but thankfully you can drive to corners in your own car which is a great! As beautiful as this track is walking around this track would suck.
7am the next day. I prep my gear and got ready for a long day. At 8am the media personnel all gather behind the podium for a safety briefing before the start of the weekend. After the quick brief we then headed to our spots trackside for the start of the practice sessions. Each practice session varies between classes. Some sessions are 20 mins, and some 40 mins long. Choosing a corner to shoot at depends on the time of day the light shines. The sun was already so high up that morning, so there wasn't any of that warm soft glow that usually peeks through.
The rest of the day consisted of shooting at different corners, and exploring different areas to shoot. Breaks in between were heading back to the media center to transfer photos, hydrating, and munching on snacks. After all was done 11 hours flew by.
Off to Monterey bay in a few weeks!
Special thanks to April Y, Calishine Racing, James, Randy, and MotoAmerica for an unforgettable weekend.
